I began work on these images while traveling through 24 states and 3 provinces, living in a Volkswagen van powered by vegetable oil. Due to space limitations I was forced to make smallish drawings, limited again by the choice of materials that I could travel with and use in a small, enclosed space. Most of this series was completed with colored pencils.

This is the first exhibition in which I have made a concerted effort to move away from a certain reliance on text as part of the visual form. The cloud images are letterpress prints made from original drawings and printed with the aid of Elinor Nissley of Krank Press in Los Angeles.

In August I will present a larger exhibition from this same series at Birdo Flugas in Shiogama, Japan.

Chantale Doyle was born on Vancouver Island in 1971. She is best known for the comic books she self-published under the titles Misery and Vomit and As Air to Water. Doyle spent 6 years in Montréal before moving to California in 1997. She has most recently self-published a small book called Cry me a River. Doyle’s work is almost always created on paper with pencil, ink, colored pencil or a combination thereof. Images are usually accompanied by text which is designed to lead to viewer to determine their own meaning in the combination of words and images.

Doyle currently lives and works in the Mojave desert in Southern California.
