These paintings are the latest manifestation of my interest in minimal abstraction and optical art. Most recently this investigation has been about a cut-and-paste approach to pattern and minimal form. The paintings usually begin with an all-over pattern or colour composition which then acts to influence the introduction of a disparate element: patterns are interrupted by incongruous forms and minimal colour-fields are disrupted by the superimposition of graphic shapes. Materials are a principal source of inspiration and in my most recent series the use of spray paint allowed for an approach that could either emphasize or remove gesture. These works represent an investigation of that dynamic as well as an interest in painting that works to engage the eye of the viewer in the tradition of optical art.

Deirdre McAdams is a visual artist living and working in Vancouver. She is a recent graduate of Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2008) where she studied painting.
