Short: Mothlight [1963] Directed by Stan Brakhage
Running time: 3min, 15 seconds. A film by legendary American experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. This short film represents his attempt to re-animate moths that were killed by their inescapable attraction to light and heat, and seeks to give meaning to the “otherwise unacceptable unhappiness or misery” of self-immolation which he saw as a metaphor for the artistic impulse.
Feature: The Bicycle Thief [1948] Directed by Vittorio De Sica
Running time: 93 minutes. This classic Italian film takes place in post World War 2 Italy and tells the story of a man desperate to provide for his family. The only employment he is able to find depends upon his owning a bicycle, and when the bicycle is stolen his level of desperation escalates, leading him to make choices which threaten his dignity. A moving exploration of family, poverty and alienation.
