‘Wonderfat’ is the first solo show of Judit Navratil in Vancouver. It represents three main periods of her works from the past 2 years — from the end of her residence-documentation paintings, through her first impressions of Vancouver, to her imaginary tear recycling factory.
Her masters thesis work ‘war and peace’ summarizes her works of the university years. She’s drawn the main places of her life 1982–2008. The slow and detailed work allowed her to experience a meditative way of remembering the everyday objects which surrounded her and built deep into her visuality. The details of stronger and more faded memories give the rythmn and patterns.
After examining her intimate personal spaces, Judit started to map the public areas as well. The short animation ‘lifeislife’ is about life in the 7th district of Budapest (nicknamed ‘Chicago’) where Judit and her little neighbour friends spend a great deal of time.
The ‘aversions’ (so bear!) and ‘cravings’ were made after she moved to Vancouver, discovering the differences between her home (dirty, chaotic, exciting, surprising Eastern European background) and this new, beautiful, clean capitalist city, where you can do lots of stuff with lots of money as long as you stay in between the boundaries of strict rules and laws.
Mass production, standardization, factory-like business allows an organized and high-quality life in material levels, and the closeness of the amazing mountains and ocean let us keep connected to nature. Pros and cons to observe on both continents make this experience so interesting and fun.
‘Wonderfat’ reflects on the beauty of diversity, different lifestyles, trends and solutions.
