NO KIDS
THE FINCHES (San Fransisco)
KEY LOSERS (ex-Dear Nora)
Vancouver’s No Kids play a show to commemorate the release of their new 12″ EP entitled “JUDY AT THE GROVE”. They have just returned from a European spring tour with Mount Eerie and this will be their first local show of the year. They will be joined by Key Losers from Portland, which is led by the incomparable Katy Davidson (ex-Dear Nora) who will be performing new material along with San Francisco’s tremendous The Finches. This is pop heaven people!
Vancouver, Canada’s No Kids are comprised of songwriter Nick Krgovich and multi-instrumentalists Julia Chirka and Justin Kellam. They released their critically acclaimed debut “Come Into My House” on German imprint Tomlab in 2008, and this spring will see the release of their brand new 12″ EP “Judy At The Grove%rdquo; which spins rich compositions out of obsessions with Old Hollywood grandeur and Mullholland Dr.-style mystery, culminating in an intense and personal ode to a lost Los Angeles. The four songs that make up Judy At The Grove conjure a dreamland where palm trees cast impossibly long shadows, courtyard swimming pools glow at night, and washed-up movie stars haunt the streets looking for love. No Kids have built their own musical universe of intricate vocal lines, precision harmonies, lush orchestrals, slinky funk guitars, 70′s television cop drama horns, fusion Rhodes grooves, and tight rhythms of both the human and non human variety. This release follows numerous North American and European tours with the likes of Dirty Projectors, Mirah, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and frequent collaborator and Tomlab-lablemate Mt. Eerie.
Key Losers is Katy Davidson who used to do a project/band called Dear Nora in the ’00s. I still make music. I have kept it a mostly private endeavor since I killed Dear Nora in 2008. I plan to resurface somewhat in 2010. Mainly I’ve been working on a project called Key Losers. This is music equally influenced by capitalism, transportation, networks, alienation, aggression, and Mexican food. I have a Key Losers tumblr page in the works. Key Losers is not a Guided by Voices cover band.
San Francisco Bay Area acoustic duo THE FINCHES (CAROLYN PENNYPACKER RIGGS and AARON MORGAN) have been wowing local audiences with their endearing songs of fantasy architecture, filial love, and travel anxiety. Their EP Six Songs will disarm even the toughest of souls, as Pennypacker effortlessly charms any crowd within miles of her deceptively coy approach to musical storytelling. Unabashedly influenced by Leonard Cohen and Francois Hardy (“The House with Two Front Doors” borrows a melody
from Hardy’s “La Maison Ou J’ai Grandi”), the band brilliantly tread that fine line between pop and folk. On this their first release, Pennypacker already threatens to join that rare club of songwriters, from Vashti Bunyan to Tracy Thorn (Marine Girls) to Mirah, who manage to stay both sweet and poetically mature, warmly innocent but never crossing the line into sugary tweeness.
