Similar Items is presented simultaneously within two exhibition spaces. The exhibit takes place at a constructed curatorial platform called Storefront, which is enclosed inside the large sized windows at the front of Blim’s retail space. Blim’s front windows act as an entrance to artists’ studios, a gallery, performance venue, and a retailer; meanwhile, Storefront serves as a multifunctional mobile space that is used to host and house exhibitions and events. For the duration of the exhibit the roles of these two storefronts mirror each other in a form of object alliteration, merging to enhance the function of the other.
The exhibiting artists engage with specific aspects of Storefront and aspire to alter the perception of the space. Each artist customized their works to the storefront’s dimensions, and executed directly on and inside of the structure. Michael Markowsky’s vibrant painting on the façade turns the storefront into a camouflage in Blim’s polychromatic product display area. To fill the windows’ negative space, Ryan Ling packs it with dark geometric shapes, while Krista Belle Stewart and Raymond Boisjoly cover the window glass with vinyl adhesive. Dennis Ha makes use of generic garments to accessorize the space with tailor-made curtains. Andrew Fisher works with materials for home renovation to expand the surface of the sandwich board. These works are formal interventions to help transform the Storefront and Blim’s front windows, into one continuous exhibit that blends the conventional functionality of different architectural areas.
