Before this and Now is a collection of work based on the space of Blim. Paintings and drawings where the past and present of the building are made evident. Details of the space are pulled out and played with. It is a space where art is made and shown, and has now become even more integral as a subject.
Madeline Smith was born in Mission, British Columbia in 1982. She attended high school at Langley Fine Arts School and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from Simon Fraser University in 2007. She recently spent a year in Ontario working at the Art Gallery of Peterborough as a children’s art educator.
Smith has worked in a variety of mediums and contexts including installation, sculpture and video, but painting remains her primary focus. Many of her recent oil paintings examine the details of detritus in urban spaces and explore the relationship between people and their by-products.
Madeline Smith lives and works in Vancouver.
