Opening: 8 – 11 PM, Friday May 25

The main focus of these silkscreen editions was to develop an understanding of the tools and materials which I utilize to create the pieces, mainly the Exacto knife, vellum stencil paper, oil paint and Stonehenge paper. Rather than me dictating what it is I wanted the tools and materials to do, I felt I could achieve much more if I let them lead me in direction they desired. In the end, they took on an enjoyable journey to unique destinations of composition, form and colour.

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Keith Weiss studied art and design in Alberta and currently lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia. Taking a back seat, Keith desires that intuition be the driving force of his art work, to take him where he needs to go.

Blim presents:

Patterns Absence

By Kaytee Kilgour and Soledad Munoz

Everything starts with the warp.

Ephemeral patterns are revealed when movement, light and people weave themselves into the absence.

KT Kilgour was born in Aberystwyth, Wales and immigrated to Canada as a young child. Daughter to a weaver and recording engineer, KT grew up amidst the analog processes of craft and music. In 2009, KT graduated from the Textile Arts program at Capilano University where she studied the traditional textile process. Wanting to explore the conceptual processes within craft she continued on to study Visual Arts at Emily Carr University with a focus on textile sculpture. KT will be exhibiting her final grad project in the 2012 Emily Carr Grad Exhibition.

As a skilled weaver KT engages with textiles as personal expression. Her current practice bridges theories of craft and feminism through labour, process, perception and technology. The extension of the body through the loom has led her to question how other structures function in our environment in relation to the human conditions of control, perception and embodiment. www.ktkilgour.com

Soledad Munoz is an interdisciplinary artist born in Toronto, Canada and raised in Rancagua, Chile. Through the combination of new and old technologies she explores the in-between and ever-changing bridges between sonic and visual spheres, navigating away from language and representation. While still living in Chile, Soledad focused on the visual aspects of the cinematographic discipline, developing skills as a Camera Operator, Art and Photography Director at The School of Film Arts at ARCIS University. After returning back to Canada she completed the Textile Arts Program at Capilano University, following her interest in traditional techniques.

Soledad is now furthering her education at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Primarily a weaver she has focused in the studies of structures, which she sees as crossing points and ground for her practice. www.wovenstructure.com

Isolation Day

By Ashley Andel

Opening: 8 – 11 PM, Friday May 4

Accurately described by the quote “slipping into madness is good for the sake of comparison” coined by American artist Jenny Holzer, and popularized by the seminal Japanese electropop band Yellow Magic Orchestra, Isolation Day is about periodic escape from daily mundanity by way of mendacity; like playing hooky from school for a day to surround one’s self with bright, playful and lovable delusions.
Inspired by the contrast between North and South Korea, and often constructed to the saccharine tunes of Kpop darlings Humming Urban Stereo after a day of work in a dusty warehouse.

Ashley Andel is a Vancouver based artist who amuses himself by making things. Sometimes, he amuses others with his output. This is his second show at Blim; the first one being “Reticent Work”, mounted in October 2009.

Biographie Interaction

By Stephane Brogniez and Dianna Lippolis

Biographie Interactions is a collaborative installation between Belgium based artists Stephane Brogniez and Dianna Lippolis. Stephane Brogniez’s work is an explosion of abstract forms, combined with geometric drawings, stemming beyond the framework. Diana Lippolis’s work is more intimate and poetic, as each drawing is contained within the artwork. Together they create a space that is both visually kinetic and abstractly human.

Stephane Brogniez, also known as Digital mushy, is fascinated with creative thinking, visual problem solving, conceptual design, identity and branding, typography, print, packaging and interactive design. He enjoys deconstructing things to find out how they work. He earned his Bachelor of Applied Arts (Digital arts) at the Fine Art academia Tournai Belgium.

Greek/Italian born Belgium based artist, Dianna Lippolis studied art at the School of Fine Arts in Belgium. She learned different techniques and means of artistic expression to create drawings with simplicity and spontaneity. Each drawing tells a story, and is inspired by many symbols of daily life, surrealism and the absurd literature.

Blim presents:

Colour Me Chlorella

Algae paintings by Mel King

Opening: 8 – 11 PM, Friday March 23
Art show runs March 23 – April 7

What you see here is a collection of paintings I prefer to call dialogues. They are intimate conversations with my materials as I experience myself painting. Arising out of an obsession with chromatic black, algae, smoke, ash and crystals, my practice is very intuitive, frustrating yet fulfilling. My sensibilities rely heavily on direct experience and careful looking. I prefer to construct my own sort of texture by observing an object in space and allowing my memory to colour and distort the details rather than using photographic or printed material for inspiration. The suggestion of something that feels familiar yet remains unnameable intrigues me. My process begins with Chlorella — an ancient super algae that I came across in my quest to attain better health and overcome feelings of anxiety. Beginning as an early morning smoothie ritual, I decided that it might be an interesting pigment to play with. Because it is alive, the Chlorella inhabits the painting in its own organic way, dripping and pooling however it pleases. With each gesture, I respond to the previous one and so the painting emerges out of an interplay between me and the intelligence of my pigment. What began as a curiosity has now become a starting point for my creative process. Expanding beyond traditional painting materials, my toolbox has come to accommodate the use of algae, incense ash and even spring water.

I believe that it is the responsibility of the artist to shed light into the darkness of men's hearts. Our memories inform the way we interpret pictures. It is the viewer who completes the image, not the artist. The artist merely suggests. Even a suggestion can trigger something within us, perhaps even reminding us of something we once knew but have since forgotten. I believe that as an artist, I have become a conscious observer of myself in relation to my environment. I do not believe that humans exist in a vacuum. What we feel, see, hear and do collectively influences and affects each and every one of us; our body, mind and spirit are always communicating with our environment whether intentionally or not. I'm never really sure where I end and someone else begins. My materials are very important to me because they create a direct link to my artistic sensibilities and my imagination. I paint because it is the only time I really feel like myself. When I paint, I'm trying to make sense of my own experiences and what it means to be human. I never know what will happen in the studio. I enter my process with very few rules, if any at all. The painting starts as a sort of mindless, visceral experience and as time unfolds, the real work begins. BFA, graduated 2009, Emily Carr University.
