Introductory to Life Drawing — Time, Tools, and Techniques

Sunday May 8 | 1 – 4 PM | $25 (incl. materials)
Featuring: Robert Macdermot

  1. What tools and materials should I have on hand?
  2. What techniques are involved in using these tools and materials effectively in the limited time(2–3 hours) involved?

Drawing an accurate representation of an object or person in real space involves techniques evolved over many centuries. Contrary to what most people might tend to think, it is less an innate talent than an acquired skill available to anyone with reasonable eyesight and depth perception and the will to persevere in its accomplishment.

This 3-hour workshop is geared to assist you in how to effectively get the most out of a life drawing session. The course will include a demonstration and discussion with respect to the limitations of the room(s) you are drawing in, as well as some tips on life drawing session etiquette.

Rob MacDermot is a fine artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Rob loves to draw and paint objects realistically from life. Rob’s focus is on basic academic skills in the Western European tradition, using the human form as subject. He is adept in pen and ink illustration and cartooning, drawing particularly with conte crayons, and painting with both oils and watercolours.

What the Participant Should Bring:
– Exacto/utility knife
– New soft pencil, 6B or charcoal — Staedtler is a reliable brand
– Your favourite black crayon or chalk: conte crayon or compressed charcoal
– Kneaded eraser — any art store will help you to select one
